Flanders v Hungary
19-07-09
Opener Brett Meredith smashed 76 to help Flanders claim a 31-run victory over Hungary as they took eight points from their first EuroTwenty20 match to take an early initiative in Group A.
Flanders skipper Dave Szumowski won the toss and elected to bat although the decision look to have backfired after he departed early after making just 3.
But Meredith saw off the dangerous Andrew Leckonby who finished with impressive figures of 3-6 off his four overs and went on to dominate the innings with a string of boundaries in a classy 76.
Thomas Selig (11), Mike Bowater (13) and Louis Lissarrague (14) provided some valuable lower-order runs and it would have been more but for two spectacular catches from Ted Weise.
Weise then went on to prove he was capable with the ball as the teenager grabbed 2-35 while Mahesh Singh (1-28) and Nick Palmer (1-22) took a wicket each as Flanders claimed two extra batting points with the opening day's highest score of 151/7.
Hungary lost Leckonby (0) and Palmer (7) cheaply as their reply got off to a poor start but Ed Allnutt began the recovery with a fluid 47.
Lucky Singh (14) combined well with Allnutt before the latter was bowled by Robin Richardson (2-22) but the Hungary lower order failed to fire.
Flanders were wayward with the ball and conceded 32 extras but ultimately Szumowski (2-26), Mike Bowater (2-15) and Gareth Wilson (1-25) as well as some clever run outs saw Hungary dismissed for 122.
Flanders grabbed two extra bonus points for dismissing Hungary who were able to collect an additional point for pass the century mark.
